What documents will Motorway ask sellers for?

Motorway collects the MOT certificate and service history documents from sellers while they are profiling their car. Then, we collect the following documents online to verify the car and the seller:

  • Proof of purchase
  • V5C logbook
  • Driving license
  • Proof of address matching the V5C logbook or driving license, if they do not match each other
  • Finance settlement letter (if applicable)
  • VAT invoice (if applicable)
  • Written authorisation and photo ID from the registered keeper (if applicable)
  • Probate documentation (if applicable)

These documents are all checked over by Motorway agents once a sale is agreed. If anything is missing or unclear, they will settle this with the seller. These checks can typically be completed within two working days.

If any further paperwork is needed, such as probate documentation, Motorway agents in the Document Collection Team will request it from the seller and verify it.

We tell sellers to have their owner's manual and V5C logbook tear-out ready to hand over to you during collection. They are also advised to have their driving license with them, to prove their identity.
