What is KYC and why does it matter?
What is KYC?
KYC stands for Know Your Customer. It is a standard identity and business verification process used across different industries and other major auction platforms. This is to confirm that dealers are legitimate, registered businesses. It helps keep the Motorway marketplace safe and trusted for everyone.
Why do I need to complete KYC?
KYC is now a mandatory requirement for all dealers on Motorway. It is part of our commitment to maintaining a safe, compliant marketplace and aligns with FCA regulatory requirements. Since 2024, all new dealers already complete KYC as part of onboarding. We are now extending this to dealers who joined before it became a standard requirement.
I've been on Motorway for years without any issues. Why is this being introduced now?
We understand this may feel like an additional step, but KYC is fast becoming the industry standard across marketplaces. It protects all dealers on the platform by ensuring everyone buying and selling is a verified, legitimate business. The process has been designed to be as quick and easy as possible.
Deadline and consequences
What is the deadline to complete KYC?
You must complete your KYC application by 30th June 2026. This deadline cannot be extended.
What happens if I don't complete KYC by 30 June?
If your KYC application has not been submitted by the deadline, your access to the Motorway platform will be removed until application is completed.
Can I get more time?
No extensions are available. The deadline is 30th June 2026. With 6 weeks to complete a process that takes most dealers just a few minutes, there is plenty of time to get this done. We strongly encourage you to complete it as early as possible.
What happens after my access is removed? Can it be restored?
Yes. Once you have submitted a completed KYC application and it has been approved, your access will be restored. However, we recommend completing this well before the deadline to avoid any disruption.
Completing your KYC application
How long does it take?
Most dealers complete the process in just a few minutes. The form is fully online with no paperwork required.
What information do I need to have ready?
You will need the following:
- Your legal company name, company number and registered address
- Your business trading address
- Date of birth for all company Directors
- Residential address, email address and phone number for one nominated Director
- Date of birth and residential address for all Beneficial Owners
What is a Beneficial Owner?
A Beneficial Owner is any individual who owns 25% or more of your business, or who has significant control over it. If you are unsure, you can check your company's filing at Companies House.
Why has my form been pre-filled?
Where we can access your company information from Companies House, we will pre-populate the relevant fields for you. You will only need to provide personal details for Directors and Beneficial Owners. Please ensure you review and check that it is accurate.
Do I need to upload any documents or photo ID?
In most cases, no. The standard process does not require photo ID. A small number of applications may require additional documentation after initial review - if this applies to you, we will contact you separately.
How does Motorway's KYC process compare to other platforms?
Our process is simpler than KYC requirements on other major platforms which typically require upfront photographic evidence such as passport or driving licence copies. We have designed this to be as low-effort as possible for dealers.
Does someone else at my dealership need to complete the KYC form?
The form needs to include information about company Directors and Beneficial Owners, but it can be completed by anyone with access to that information. The Authorised Users section has been removed from this version of the form - you do not need to complete it.
